US & Germany CPI

The US

The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) will be reported this week on Wednesday, 12 March. This report is one of the most frequently referred-to inflation and deflation gauges used by central bankers and other policymakers alike.

While the results of the release are yet to be determined, economists expect February’s consumer prices to show stubbornly sticky inflation.

The main projections are as follows:

  • CPI (excluding energy and food prices) climbed 0.3%, slightly below January’s 0.4%.

  • Core CPI rose 3.2% YoY, higher than the Fed’s 2% inflation goal.

Some of the main drivers for these less-than-optimistic projections include the US trade wars and federal job cuts. Interestingly, Wednesday, the same day as the CPI report, marks the transition to 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. Moreover, according to a recent Fox News interview with President Donald Trump, the US economy is tackling a “period of transition.” (Source: Yahoo Finance)

Germany

Germany’s CPI is scheduled to be released on Friday, 14 March, and is expected to show an increase of 2.3% in February (similar to January’s figures).

As such, the ECB may be nearing the end of its easing cycle if inflation rates continue to fall in line with projections and approach the 2% target.

Still, only time will tell what these two major economies have in store.
